Simon Mirakaj was born in 1945 in Iballë, Pukë. On July 17th 1945, his family was interned in Berat. From 1949 his family was interned in Kodër Turan and then in Tepelena forced labour Camp, a city where Simon started elementary school. In 1954 his family was deported in Lushnje where he continued his schooling and later engaged in forced labor in agriculture where he stayed until July 4, 1989. His father escaped from the regime while other family members were shot for resisting communism. He finished general high school in Lushnje, in 1968. After the collapse of communism, in 1996 he graduated from the Faculty of Law, and in 1998 he graduated from the Academy of Law. From 1993 to August 2002 he worked as an inspector in the archives of the Ministry of Interior as Major rank. On August 20, 2002, he was appointed General Director of the Institute for the Integration of Former Political Persecuted, a position he held until November 2013. On December 18, 2015, the President of the Republic awarded him the title “Knight of the Order of Scanderbeg”. He now lives in Tirana and is a member of the Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents (AIDSSH).
