Gesine Oltmanns was born in 1965 in Olbernhau. In 1983 she moved to Leipzig. During the GDR period she worked for a popular solidarity association for the elderly, then in a post office and a music publishing house. After reunification, she worked on the rehabilitation of former dissidents in the GDR. She is a civil rights activist.
